Hello, my name is Dan and I heard about RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program – Dane County) when my wife came home from the Verona Senior Center and said, “They really need drivers.” I sent in an application, and after a little training, I was driving last spring, taking people to medical appointments. I do just one or two rides a week. Riders are happy to be getting to their appointments, and to have someone waiting for them afterwards. It’s great to feel useful and appreciated. And, as a bonus, I get to hear a lot of interesting life stories.
Driving takes me to areas I might not normally go. I’ve looked for interesting places to visit near each destination clinic. During short appointments, I just read a book in the waiting room. During longer appointments, there are libraries, coffee shops, stores, and parks nearby. One day I went to the zoo. In not too many years, I may be asking for rides myself, from the next generation of volunteer drivers. So, I hope there will be a next generation. To get involved call the Senior Center and ask about RSVP driving.
Hi, my name is Chuck and I’m a volunteer in the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program at the Verona Senior Center. My responsibility in the program involves delivering meals to participating Verona residents to help meet some of their nutritional needs.
The kitchen staff at the Senior Center are very organized and helpful which makes volunteering there go as smoothly as possible. I had been looking for something where I could spend some time each week contributing to the community. My wife mentioned the Senior Center was looking for volunteers in the MOW program so, I applied.
I’ve been a driver for about two months now and find it quite rewarding. The people I meet while delivering meals are happy to see me (or is it the meal?) and appreciate the MOW driver’s efforts. Plus, it is interesting to chat with my delivery customers. Volunteering is a rewarding way for me to give back to a community where I had worked for several years as a Postal Clerk. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an opportunity to volunteer in a beneficial program that can be flexible with the number of hours you can give.

Meet Dwight…
In the summer of 2021, I retired from a long corporate career. I had spent 40 years working with customers and business partners, leading teams and meeting timelines. I was ready to retire, relax and take a break……within a couple of months, however, I realized something was missing. I missed those personal interactions — meeting and talking with people. I actually missed having that schedule to which I had grown so accustomed. In some ways, I felt almost bored……not yet ready to take up the rocking chair. My wife was attending some activities at the Verona Senior Center and suggested I look into doing the same. I made some inquiries and was asked if I would consider volunteer driving. Last August, I started driving through the RSVP program, delivering lunchtime meals in the Verona area. I also volunteered to provide occasional rides for folks who can’t drive to medical or social appointments. Now, a year later, I couldn’t be more satisfied with taking that step. I have a regular weekly routine. The program is flexible and the staff is great. I have met many wonderful and interesting folks on my routes and truly enjoy the ability to help – to give back some of my time for others. If you’re like me, I’d encourage you to check out RSVP — small time cost, with big reward.
