Beware of Scams

If it weren’t hard enough to deal with the current pandemic, we now have to pay particular attention to the
increase in scams happening. The Better Business Bureau serving Wisconsin is a non-profit, non-governmental
organization that aims to create an ethical, trustworthy marketplace where buyers and sellers can trust each
other. Here is some great info about preventing scams.

Current Popular Scams

Scam websites claim to sell in-demand products
What to do:  Double check the website URL.
DON’T share your personal info! Scammers phish for information like address & credit card info

Fake Phone Calls, Texts & Robocalls
Examples:

  • Offering “free COVID-19 tests” – There is no online test for coronavirus!
  • Asks for charitable donations, airline refunds and some are offering products for fake cures.
What to do: Do not answer calls from numbers you don’t recognize. If you do answer, hang up. Don’t press
any buttons. No matter what the message says, do not click!

Remember: government agencies do not communicate through text messages.

Ignore any instructions to text STOP or NO to prevent future texts. This is a common ploy by scammers to confirm they have
a real, active phone number.
Report all such phone calls to the FTC’s DoNotCall.gov website
